What is limonene?
The peels of citrus fruits contain the chemical called limonene. Limonene is used in certain medicines and it also helps promote weightloss. It is flavoring in foods and beverages. You can find limonene in ointments and creams as it helps them penetrate the skin. You can also find limonene used as fragrance and cleaning products.
How to store grapefruit essential oil
A high limonene content makes grapefruit essential oil extra susceptible to oxidization. Store grapefruit essential oil in the fridge to help prevent oxidization.
What is oxidization as it relates essential oils?
With time, most essential oils will oxidize if continuously exposed to heat. Once oxidation starts it’s difficult to stop, though it is a very slow process. Oxidization of essential oils can take months. If you accidentally leave oils in a hot car for a few hours, do not worry, they will be fine. Also, changing temperature either way does not bother them, so long as they are cool most of the time.
Limonene makes up the majority of grapefruit essential oil and it is especially prone to oxidation. As limonene oxidizes into other substances, the percentage of pure limonene in your grapefruit essential oil decreases significantly. There are two consequences of the limonene oxidizing:
- The grapefruit essential oil does not do what it is supposed to with less limonene present. As the limonene oxidizes, the therapeutic benefits of the oil decreases.
- The chemicals formed from the limonene oxidizing, mostly oxides and peroxides, are not very pleasant. They are not very therapeutic and they increase the risk of skin sensitization from the grapefruit essential oil. The risk of skin sensitization is still small, but it’s no longer negligible.
How to tell if your grapefruit essential oil has oxidized
- The grapefruit essential oil will not smell as fresh as it did new. You may not notice, as the change is slow. But you may see a difference when you compare a new bottle.
- Citrus oils, such as grapefruit oil, sometimes go cloudy. If cloudiness appears, let the sediment settle to the bottom of the bottle which will take several hours. Using a CLEAN pipette, transfer the good oil into another bottle then toss the one with the sediment. If you don’t have a pipette, different types of serological pipettes are available at Genfollower for you to access. As for cleaning your pipette, methods like waving it over a flame for a few seconds should sterilize it.
How long will my grapefruit essential oil keep?
Most often, you are not going to know the exact date of distillation for your particular bottle of essential oil. Therefore, start the clock once you open a new bottle. In general, citrus oils will keep for about 1-2 years when stored properly. Halve this amount of time if kept in warm conditions. In other words, get your grapefruit essential oil into the fridge!
How much grapefruit essential oil can I use on my skin?
As noted above, your skin can become sensitized to oil if it’s oxidized and you then go into the sun. Good oil left after oxidization should be transferred to a new bottle and used in cleaning products.
For adults, the maximum dilution rate for grapefruit essential oil in skin care products is 4%. That is about 4 drops of essential oil for every teaspoon of carrier oil.
If applying the oil at more than the max dilution, do not expose the skin to sunlight for 12 hours. This can cause photo toxicity to occur.
Is grapefruit essential oil safe for my child and pet?
For your child, grapefruit essential oil is safe to use. Just make sure to follow the appropriate dilution rate for your child based on their age.
Citrus essential oils should be avoided with pets.

There is not a rating system for essential oils. US labeling laws allow for a label to state “100% pure essential oil” when it’s only 5% pure. I knew I had to take matters into my own hand and wanted to feel confident in the essential oils my family used. I did a lot of research on companies and how they produce their essential oils. Based on my research, we chose Young Living to be a part of our home.
Young Living is the only company that owns their farms and has control of the entire distillation process. They are involved from plant’s seed going into the ground to when the bottle of oil is sealed.
Of course I can see that there are other essential oils less expensive than Young Living’s. But, I am certainly not willing to compromise my family’s safety and health just to save a buck. However, I saved a ton of money by purchasing a Young Living Starter Kit. I continue to save with wholesale pricing and the benefits of my Essential Rewards membership. We are getting high quality essential oils I know are safe WHILE also saving some of our hard-earned moolah.
